There was an Akashiwo this morning! The wharf this morning was chilly (I could see my breath) with little to no breeze. My sampling site was sunny with 0% cloud coverage. In the distance, there was haze covering the mountains. The surface of the water had small bubbles. There were large rolling waves moving towards the sampling site. The water this week was a slightly darker green than last week with the same visibility of 1.5m. Chlorophyll significantly increased from last week. Dinoflagellates dominated the water column. Akashiwo was abundant in the water. Prorocentrum was common. Dinophysis and Lingulodinium were present. The HAB species that were observed in the water this morning included Pseudo-nitzschia, Alexandrium, Dinophysis and Akashiwo sanguinea.

The water this week was slightly bluer than last week with the same visibility of 5.0m. Chlorophyll decreased from last week. Diatoms dominated the water column. Chaetoceros and Pseudo-nitzschia were common in the water. Pleurosigma was present in the water. The HAB species that were observed in the water this morning included Pseudo-nitzschia, Alexandrium, Dinophysis and Akashiwo sanguinea.

Another warm and sunny morning at the wharf.  Water temperature increased again this week (1C).  Phytoplankton biomass was similar to last week and the assemblage remains mostly dinoflagellates.  While there were still plenty of Dinophysis in the net tow, Prorocentrum were the most abundant this week.  Pn were seriata-size (just a couple chains) and no P. australis or P. multiseries were detected.  Alexandrium counts decreased an order of magnitude this week.

The wharf was beautiful (see picture below). There was a breeze on the wharf. This morning there were clear skies and a bright sun. However, the sky in the distance was slightly hazy. The surface of the water had slow rolling waves that moved towards the direction of the dock. The water this week was bluer than last week with the same visibility of 4.5m. Chlorophyll decreased from last week. Dinoflagellates dominated the water column. Prorocentrum and Dictyocha were common in the water column. Meanwhile Pleurosigma was present. Its been a couple months, but it was sunny and warm at the wharf this am.  With the “summer” weather came an increase in water temp (up 2C from last week).  Phytoplankton biomass decreased this week and the assemblage shifted to mostly dinoflagellates.  Dinophysis was the most abundant (probably 3 different species).  Pn were seriata-size, no P. australis or P. multiseries were detected.  And Alexandrium counts increased this week.

It was a warm morning at the wharf – T-shirt weather has finally reached the central coast! A little too warm (75F!) in the lab while processing samples. The skies were clear, the sun was out, and not a lot of activity (human or animal). Chlorophyll dropped this week – diatoms have been replaced by a lovely array of dinoflagellates, including Akashiwo sanguinea, Dinophysis, Alexandrium, and Cochlodinium.

Marine layer was pretty thick down at the wharf and lots of surface debris was in the sampling area this morning.  Net tow was similar to last week – assemblage was mostly diatoms (with a fair number of dinoflagellates in the mix).  Thalassiosira was the most abundant and Alexandrium counts are holding steady.

Fog-ust has set in. The wharf this morning was very cloudy with a slight breeze. I couldn’t see the mountains on the horizon. There were small ripples on the surface of the water. There was also more kelp on the surface of the water than usual. The water smelt stinky this morning when I performed my net tows. The water this week was a slightly lighter green than last week with a visibility of 4.5m. Chlorophyll decreased from last week. Diatoms dominated the water column. Chaetoceros and Asterionellopsis were common in the water. Meanwhile, Eucampia, Pseudo-nitzschia, Cylindrotheca, Dinophysis, and Prorocentrum were present in the water.
