* Quick HAB Observations *
– Pseudo-nitzschia: Rare
– Alexandrium: Common
– Dinophysis: Present
– Margalefidinium: None
* Impressions *
Another cool morning with the marine layer decidedly present at the wharf. Zooplankton are rarely mentioned in this report, but Tiarina were the most abundant plankton in the net tow this week. The number of zooplankton coupled with the dramatic decrease in phytoplankton biomass made the assemblage a more difficult one to assess. The phytoplankton assemblage shifted to mostly dinoflagellates this week led by Protoperidinium (several species). There were no Pseudo-nitzschia cells observed in the probed counts this week and the Alexandrium cell concentration increased 2 orders of magnitude. Single cells of Alex and chains of up to 8 cells were zooming around the petri dish.

This morning it was misting and the sky was filled with clouds. The mountains in the horizon were not visible. There was a slight breeze but the surface water was relatively calm. Several boats were docked at my site. The water this week was bluer than last week with a visibility of 4.75m. Chlorophyll significantly decreased from last week. Both Pseudo-nitzschia and Protoperidinium were common. Chaetoceros, Gyrodinium (pink tipped), and Gonyaulax were present. The HAB species that were observed in the water this morning included Pseudo-nitzschia, Alexandrium, and Dinophysis.
