* Impressions *
After yesterday’s rains the water color was visibly brown with sediment and the net tows resembled strong coffee diluted with ginger ale. There was a small undercurrent that kept sweeping the net tow and van dorn off their vertical trajectories. Otherwise, the morning was calm, cool and mostly sunny. Chlorophyll increased this week, with Chaetoceros dominating, followed by Guinardia. Dinoflagellate diversity dropped markedly from last week with just a couple rare sightings: Ceratium and Protoperidinium. Diatom diversity remained quite high like last week, however the sample looked more like a warzone – lots of diatom pieces/parts (many without pigment) strewn about amongst the sediment.
