* Quick HAB Observations *
– Pseudo-nitzschia: None
– Alexandrium: Rare
– Dinophysis: Rare
– Margalefidinium: Present

* Impressions *
Sunny and warm this am – halfway through the heat wave.  No sign of the bait ball this week.  Net tow was mostly dinoflagellates and the phytoplankton biomass increased this week.  Akashiwo was the most abundant.  Alexandrium counts increased – saw some 8-cell chains.

The sky was mostly clear. Only toward the horizon were there wispy clouds. The sun was rising from the east. Many birds accompanied me during sampling. Similar to last week, two sea lions greeted me. The water was very calm and there was no wind. The color of the water was slightly lighter and greener than last week. However, visibility in the water column decreased by ~2.5 m compared to last week (6.5 m). Chlorophyll abundance significantly decreased from last week. California is currently experiencing a heat wave. Chaetoceros decreased in abundance. Pseudo-nitzschia abundance was observed as rare and decreased from last week. Dinophysis, Cochlodinium, and Akashiwo all appeared in the sample.
